Module 10

Discussion exercise

The videos and readings in the previous sections of this Module laid out a number of arguments in favour of prosecuting those responsible for the worst crimes – crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. Those materials also pointed to the difficulties in doing so, and the potential for the demands of justice to come into conflict with the pursuit of peace and stability.

Think of a current situation where international crimes are being committed in an ongoing armed conflict (you might look at Syria, or Central African Republic on the Human Rights Map). If the price for ending the war was giving everyone an amnesty so that there would be no criminal prosecutions of these crimes, would it be acceptable?
